Typing speed test
Type the passage shown and find out your speed in words per minute and how accurate you were. The clock starts with your first key press. Choose 15 seconds up to 2 minutes.
30 s
The morning train slid into the station while a light rain tapped on the roof. Passengers folded their umbrellas and found their seats, each of them carrying a small plan for the day ahead.
How it works
- Choose a test length.
- Start typing the text. Correct letters turn green and mistakes red.
- See your speed and accuracy when time runs out.
How speed is calculated
Words per minute counts every 5 correct characters as one word, divided by the minutes used. Only correctly typed characters count, so mistakes lower your score.
Raw speed
Raw speed counts everything you typed, right or wrong. If your raw speed is much higher than your speed, you are going too fast and making errors. Slowing down a little often raises the real score.
Accuracy
Accuracy is the share of typed characters that match the text. Letters are compared position by position, so one skipped letter makes the following letters wrong until you fix it with backspace.
A fair test
Pasting is switched off. The texts are plain English with normal punctuation, and a new text is picked each time you press New text.
Questions
What is a good speed?
Most people type 35 to 45 words per minute. Above 60 is fast, and above 80 is professional level.
Can I use backspace?
Yes. Fixing a mistake makes that character count as correct again.
Does it save my scores?
No. Nothing is stored.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, though phone keyboards are usually slower than a full keyboard.
