Count words and characters
Type or paste your text and see the counts update as you go: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, reading time, speaking time and your most used words. Your text never leaves your browser.
How it works
- Type or paste your text.
- Read the counts above the box.
- Check the most used words below to spot repetition.
How words are counted
A word is a run of letters or numbers, so "don't" and "well-known" each count as one word. Numbers count too. Counting follows spaces and punctuation rather than a language dictionary.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time assumes about 225 words per minute and speaking time about 150. These are typical averages, not exact for every reader or speaker.
Most used words
The list shows the ten words you use most, with common words such as "the" and "and" left out. It is a quick way to catch repeated words.
Characters
Characters are counted as visible characters, so an emoji counts as one. Some platforms count emoji and special characters differently, so check their own limit when it matters.
Questions
Is my text saved?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is stored or sent.
Why is my count different in Word or Google Docs?
Programs differ in how they treat hyphens, numbers and symbols, so counts can differ by a few words.
Does it work for Bangla, Hindi or other languages?
It counts words in any script made of letters and numbers. Languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese, are not split into words.
