Waist to hip ratio calculator
Where you carry fat matters as well as how much. The waist-to-hip ratio compares your waist with your hips. This calculator works it out from any unit and compares it with the limits used by the World Health Organization.
Enter waist and hip measurements in the same unit.
Waist-to-hip ratio is one clue about where fat is stored. It does not diagnose anything. Measure the waist at its narrowest and the hips at their widest.
How it works
- Choose your sex.
- Enter waist and hip in the same unit.
- Read the ratio and the comparison.
The formula
Ratio equals waist circumference divided by hip circumference. Because both are in the same unit, the unit cancels out and you can use centimetres or inches.
WHO limits
The WHO treats a ratio of 0.90 or more in men and 0.85 or more in women as a sign of abdominal obesity. Being above those figures is linked with higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Measuring
Measure the waist at its narrowest point and the hips around the widest part of the buttocks, standing relaxed with feet together.
Limits
The ratio is a screening clue, not a diagnosis. Height, age and body shape change what is normal, so use it alongside other measures.
Questions
Is a lower ratio always better?
Lower generally means less fat around the middle, but very low can come with other issues. See a doctor if worried.
