Toolstia / Body fat percentage calculator
Body fat percentage calculator
You do not need special equipment for a rough body fat estimate. This calculator uses the US Navy method, which needs only height, neck and waist measurements, plus hips for women. Add your weight to see fat mass and lean mass.
Enter your measurements with a soft tape, relaxed and not pulled tight.
This is the US Navy tape method. It can be off by several percentage points. Categories follow common fitness bands, not medical advice.
How it works
- Choose sex and units.
- Measure and enter height, neck and waist (and hips for women).
- Read the percentage, the category, and the optional fat and lean mass.
How to measure
Stand relaxed and do not pull the tape tight. Measure the neck just below the larynx, the waist at the navel for men and the narrowest point for women, and the hips at their widest. Take each twice.
Accuracy
The method can be off by several percentage points, and tape position changes the answer. It is good for tracking change over time with the same technique, less good for one-off precision.
Categories
The labels follow common fitness bands: essential fat, athletes, fitness, average and obese. They differ between men and women because women need more essential fat.
Very lean or very muscular
The formula can mislead for very muscular people or those with unusual body shapes. Results outside the usable range are refused instead of shown.
