Waist to height ratio calculator

The idea is simple: keep your waist circumference under half your height. Enter both in the same unit to get your ratio, a risk band, and the waist size that equals half your height.

Enter your waist and height in the same unit.

The usual guidance is to keep the ratio below 0.5. It is a screening idea, not a diagnosis, and does not suit growing children or very muscular people.

How it works

  1. Measure your waist and height in the same unit.
  2. Enter both.
  3. Read the ratio, the band and the half-height figure.

The bands

Below 0.4 is low, 0.4 to 0.49 is healthy, 0.5 to 0.59 means increased risk, and 0.6 or more means high risk. These bands follow commonly cited guidance.

Why use height

A waist of 90 cm means different things for a short and a tall person. Dividing by height makes one rule work across body sizes and for men and women alike.

Measuring

Measure halfway between the bottom rib and the top of the hip bone, after breathing out, without pulling the tape tight.

Limits

It does not suit growing children, pregnancy, or very muscular builds. It indicates risk but does not diagnose anything.

Questions

Is this better than BMI?

Some studies find it predicts risk better because it reflects belly fat, but neither is perfect.

Is this medical advice?

No. It is a general estimate. Speak to a doctor or dietitian about your own health and goals.
