Lean body mass calculator

Lean body mass is your weight minus body fat: muscle, bone, organs and water. This calculator estimates it from weight and height using three published formulas and shows their average and the fat share it implies.

Enter your weight and height.

Lean body mass is everything that is not fat: muscle, bone, organs and water. These formulas estimate it from height and weight only, so treat the answer as approximate.

How it works

  1. Choose sex and units.
  2. Enter weight and height.
  3. Read the three estimates and the average.

Three formulas

Boer, James and Hume all use weight and height with different constants for men and women. Showing all three lets you see how much they disagree.

What it is used for

Lean mass is used to set drug doses, and by people tracking training progress who want to know how much of a weight change is muscle.

Estimate only

Formulas know nothing about your actual muscle or fat. A body scan or skinfold test gives a better measure than any equation.

Fat share

The tool subtracts the average from your weight to show an implied body fat share. Compare it with the body fat calculator for a second view.
