Ideal weight formulas are rough guides from the 1900s. They ignore muscle, bone size and age. Talk to a doctor before setting a weight goal.
How it works
- Choose your sex and units.
- Enter your height.
- Compare the four formulas and the average.
Four formulas
Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983) and Hamwi (1964) all start from a base weight at 5 feet and add a fixed amount for every extra inch. They were made for medicine, such as setting drug doses, not as health targets.
Why results differ
Each formula uses different base weights and increments, so answers can vary by several kilograms. The spread shows how loose the idea of one ideal weight is.
Under 5 feet
The formulas were designed for people 152 cm (5 feet) or taller. Below that the results are less reliable, and the tool warns you.
What they ignore
Muscle, bone size, age and ethnicity are not considered. Use the BMI calculator and body fat calculator for other views, and a doctor for advice.
