Toolstia / readability score calculator

Readability score calculator

Paste your writing to see how easy it is to read. You get the Flesch reading ease score, the school grade level and two other common indexes, with sentence and word statistics.

Scores are for English and use a syllable estimate, so treat them as a guide. Higher reading-ease numbers are easier: 60 to 70 is plain English that most adults follow. Grade levels show the US school grade needed to read the text easily.

How it works

  1. Paste your English text.
  2. Read the reading ease and grade level.
  3. Shorten long sentences and words if the score is too hard.

Flesch reading ease

A score from 0 to about 100. Higher is easier. 60 to 70 is plain English, 30 to 50 is difficult and below 30 is very difficult.

Grade level

Flesch-Kincaid shows the US school grade needed to understand the text. Writing for the public is often aimed at grades 6 to 8.

Other indexes

Gunning fog counts long words, and Coleman-Liau uses letters per word. They tend to give similar grade levels.

Improving a score

Use shorter sentences and shorter words. Cut a long sentence into two, and swap long words for short ones.

Questions

Does it work for other languages?

No. The formulas and the syllable estimate are built for English.

Is the syllable count exact?

It is an estimate based on vowel groups, so scores can be a little off.
