What you get
favicon.ico holds 16, 32 and 48 pixel versions. The PNG set covers 16, 32, 48, 64, 180 (Apple touch icon), 192 and 512 (Android and web app icons). A small site.webmanifest is added.
Use a square image
Icons are square. A wide or tall picture is cropped from the centre to fit, so use a square logo with the important part in the middle.
Shape and padding
Choose square, rounded or circle shapes. Padding leaves a margin around the logo so it does not touch the edge, which often looks better at tiny sizes.
Installing it
Upload the files to the root folder of your website and paste the code shown into the head of your pages. Browsers cache favicons for a long time, so a change can take a while to show.
Questions
What size should my logo be?
At least 512 x 512 pixels gives the sharpest result.
Can I use a transparent logo?
Yes. The icons keep the transparency unless you pick a background colour.
Does it work with SVG logos?
First turn it into a PNG with the SVG to PNG converter, then use it here.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The icons are made on your device.
