Body frame size calculator

Frame size describes how big your bones are. It is worked out by dividing your height by your wrist circumference. Enter both to see whether you have a small, medium or large frame.

Measure around the wrist bone of your smaller wrist, just above the hand.

Frame size is a rough way to judge whether an ideal weight range should lean lower or higher. Small frame suggests the lower end, large frame the higher end.

How it works

  1. Choose sex and units.
  2. Measure your wrist and your height.
  3. Read your frame size.

The method

The ratio r is height divided by wrist circumference. For men, above 10.4 is small, 9.6 to 10.4 is medium and under 9.6 is large. For women, above 11.0 is small, 10.1 to 11.0 is medium and under 10.1 is large.

Measuring the wrist

Wrap a tape around the wrist just above the wrist bone, on the hand side of the bony bump, on the smaller wrist.

Using the result

People with small frames are often advised to aim for the lower end of ideal weight ranges and people with large frames the upper end. It is a rough adjustment only.

Limits

Wrist size is a crude stand-in for bone structure. It does not tell you about body fat.

Questions

Should I measure both wrists?

The smaller one is used, since the dominant wrist may be thicker.
