Body adiposity index calculator
The body adiposity index, or BAI, estimates body fat from hip circumference and height. Unlike BMI it needs no scale. Enter your hip size and height to get an estimated percentage.
Enter your hip circumference and height.
The body adiposity index estimates body fat from hips and height, with no scale needed. It is less accurate for very muscular or very lean people. It is not a diagnosis.
How it works
- Choose sex and units.
- Enter age, hip circumference and height.
- Read the estimate and the range.
The formula
BAI equals hip circumference in centimetres divided by height in metres to the power 1.5, minus 18. The result is read as an approximate body fat percentage.
The ranges
Adult ranges differ for men and women and shift with age. The tool uses commonly published bands for under 40, 40 to 59 and 60 and over.
Where it falls short
Studies find BAI less accurate than hoped, especially across ethnic groups and for very lean or very muscular people. It tends to be a rough guide.
Measuring hips
Wrap the tape around the widest part of the hips and buttocks, keep it level and snug but not tight.
Questions
Is BAI better than BMI?
It avoids using weight but is not clearly more accurate. Use several measures.
