Aspect ratio calculator
Enter a width and height to see the simplest aspect ratio, such as 16:9. Then enter a new width or height to find the matching size that keeps the same shape.
How it works
- Enter the width and height, or tap a common ratio.
- Read the aspect ratio.
- Enter a new width or height to get the matching size.
What it means
The aspect ratio is the width compared with the height, reduced to the smallest whole numbers. 1920 x 1080 reduces to 16:9, and 1080 x 1080 is 1:1.
Resizing without stretching
To keep a picture from looking squashed, change both sides by the same factor. If a 1920 x 1080 image becomes 1280 wide, the height should be 720.
Common ratios
16:9 is used for widescreen video, 4:3 for older screens, 1:1 for square social posts, 9:16 for vertical stories, 3:2 for many photos and 21:9 for ultrawide.
Rounding
The new size is rounded to the nearest whole pixel. Some sizes cannot keep the ratio exactly, so the ratio may be off by a fraction of a pixel.
Questions
Can I use it for print sizes?
Yes, as long as you use whole numbers. For example, enter 60 and 40 for a 6 x 4 inch photo.
How do I resize the picture itself?
Use the image resizer, which also keeps the ratio.
Why is my ratio not simple?
Some sizes, such as 1366 x 768, do not reduce to small numbers. The decimal value is also shown.
Is it free?
Yes, and it works offline in your browser.
