Toolstia / WhatsApp photo metadata remover

Remove metadata before sending a photo on WhatsApp

Sending a photo to a chat can reveal more than the picture: the place it was taken, the time and the phone model are often stored in the file. This tool shows what is inside and gives you a clean copy to send.

It works in your browser, so the photo is not uploaded to us.

Drop photos here, or click to choose

JPG, PNG, WebP (AVIF and HEIC if your browser can open them). Up to 30 files, 15 MB each. Nothing is uploaded.

Cleaning rebuilds the picture without its file data. It does not change the pixels, so invisible pixel-level watermarks are not affected.

How it works

  1. Drop your photos into the box (JPG, PNG or WebP, up to 30 files, 15 MB each).
  2. Read the report of what is hidden in each file.
  3. Download the cleaned copy and use that file for your post.

Photo versus document

When you send an image as a normal photo, WhatsApp compresses it, and this usually drops most of the stored data. When you send it as a document to keep full quality, the original file is sent as it is, including GPS and camera details.

When cleaning matters most

It matters when you send the original file: as a document, through a forwarded file link, or by uploading it to another service. It is also useful for photos of your home, your car or your children that you share with people you do not know well.

Stay private on sales and listings

If you sell things and send photos from where you live, a clean copy avoids passing on your exact location by accident.

Quality

The picture is rebuilt from the same pixels at high quality, so you can still send it as a document without losing sharpness.

Questions

Does WhatsApp remove EXIF data?

When you send a picture as a regular photo it is re-compressed, and this generally removes most metadata. Sent as a document, the file goes as it is. Cleaning first covers both cases.

Can the receiver see where I took the photo?

Only if the file still contains GPS data, for example when it was sent as a document. The report on this page tells you whether it does.

Does this work for video?

No. Only JPG, PNG and WebP images.

Is my photo sent to your server?

No. It stays in your browser.
