AI token counter

Paste a prompt, document or any text and get an estimate of how many tokens it uses. The table shows how much of common context window sizes, from 4K up to 1 million tokens, the text would fill.

This is an estimate. Each AI model counts tokens in its own way, and English text averages about 4 characters or three quarters of a word per token. Code, numbers and other languages use more tokens. For exact counts, use the model provider’s own tokenizer.

How it works

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Read the estimated tokens and the likely range.
  3. Check how much of each context window it uses.

What a token is

AI models read text as tokens, which are small pieces of words. A short common word is one token, and a long or rare word is split into several.

How the estimate works

The tool combines two rules of thumb: about 4 characters per token and about three quarters of a word per token. It shows both as a range, and the middle value as the estimate. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters are counted at about one token each.

Context windows

A context window is the most text a model can handle in one conversation, including your prompt and the reply. The table shows the share your text uses, so you can leave room for the answer.

Estimates only

Every model family uses its own tokenizer, so exact counts differ. Code, numbers and non-English text often use more tokens than plain English.

Questions

Is this the exact count?

No. It is an estimate, usually within 10 to 20 percent for English prose. Use the provider’s own tokenizer when you need an exact figure.

Does it work for other languages?

Yes, as an estimate, but languages other than English often need more tokens for the same meaning.

Is my text uploaded?
