Toolstia / Pixel to cm converter

Convert pixels to centimetres and back

A pixel has no fixed size. How big it prints depends on the resolution, measured in dots per inch (DPI). This tool converts in both directions for whatever DPI you choose.

The table lists the pixel size of common paper sizes at that DPI, handy for posters, ID photos and print files.

How it works

  1. Choose pixels to print size, or print size to pixels.
  2. Enter the value, and the DPI (300 is normal for print, 72 or 96 for screens).
  3. Read the result and the paper size table.

The formula

Inches equal pixels divided by DPI. Centimetres equal inches times 2.54, and millimetres equal inches times 25.4.

Which DPI

300 DPI is the usual target for sharp print. 150 DPI is acceptable for large posters seen from a distance. Screens are often treated as 72 or 96 for convenience.

Paper sizes

The table covers A series sizes from A0 to A6 plus Letter and Legal, converted to pixels at your DPI.

DPI is a label

Changing the DPI of a picture does not add detail. A photo with too few pixels for a large print stays soft at any DPI setting.
