Toolstia / break-even calculator
Break-even calculator
Enter your fixed costs, your selling price and your variable cost per unit. The calculator shows the number of units and the revenue where you stop losing money, and the sales needed to reach a profit target.
Use any currency. Break-even units are rounded up, because you cannot sell part of a unit.
How it works
- Enter fixed costs, price and variable cost.
- Add a target profit if you want one.
- Read the break-even units, revenue and the profit table.
How break-even works
Each sale contributes the price minus the variable cost towards your fixed costs. Break-even units equal fixed costs divided by that contribution, rounded up to a whole unit.
Fixed and variable costs
Fixed costs stay the same however much you sell, such as rent, salaries and software. Variable costs rise with each unit, such as materials, packaging and payment fees.
Target profit
To aim for a profit, add it to the fixed costs. The calculator shows the units and revenue needed to reach that number.
Reading the table
The table shows units at 0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 percent of break-even, so you can see where losses turn into profit.
Questions
What if the price is below the variable cost?
Then every sale loses money and there is no break-even point. The calculator will tell you so.
Why are units rounded up?
You cannot sell part of a unit, so you need the next whole number to cover your costs.
