Return on investment (ROI) calculator
ROI tells you how much you gained or lost compared with what you put in. Enter the amount invested and the final value. Add how many years you held it to also see the yearly return.
Enter what you put in and what it is worth now.
ROI ignores fees, taxes and inflation unless you include them in the numbers. Past returns do not predict future ones.
How it works
- Enter the amount invested and the final value.
- Optionally enter the years held.
- Read the profit or loss, ROI and yearly return.
ROI formula
ROI equals final value minus amount invested, divided by amount invested, times 100. Putting in 1,000 and getting 1,500 back is an ROI of 50%.
Yearly return
ROI says nothing about time. A 50% gain in 2 years is better than the same gain in 10. The yearly figure is final over invested, to the power of 1 over years, minus 1.
Include all costs
Put fees, taxes and running costs into the numbers if you want a true result. For a business or property, include repairs and interest paid.
Not a forecast
This is a calculation of what happened, not a prediction. Past returns do not guarantee future ones.
