Volume calculator

Pick a three-dimensional shape and enter its dimensions to get the volume and the surface area. Cube, box, sphere, hemisphere, cylinder, cone, pyramid, ellipsoid, torus and capsule are included.

Use the same unit for every measurement. Areas come out in square units of that unit and volumes in cubic units.

How it works

  1. Choose the shape.
  2. Enter the dimensions in one unit.
  3. Read the volume and surface area.

Formulas used

Box: l × w × h. Sphere: 4/3 πr³. Cylinder: πr²h. Cone: ⅓πr²h. Pyramid: ⅓ × base area × height. Torus: 2π²Rr².

Surface area

Where a surface area formula exists it is shown too. For the cone the slant height is also given, and for the pyramid the four triangular faces are included.

Units

Use the same unit for all dimensions. The volume is in cubic units of that unit.

Common uses

Filling a tank, ordering concrete or soil, packing a box, or checking how much a sphere or cylinder holds.

Questions

How do I convert cubic units to litres?

1,000 cubic centimetres make one litre, and one cubic metre is 1,000 litres.

What is a capsule?

A cylinder with a hemisphere on each end.
