Scientific notation converter

Turn a long number into scientific notation such as 2.99792458 × 10^8, E notation such as 2.99792458e+8, or engineering notation where the exponent is a multiple of three. You can also go the other way and expand 1.5e-4 into 0.00015.

Scientific notation to number

How it works

  1. Type a number and optionally the significant figures to keep.
  2. Copy the scientific, E or engineering form.
  3. Or enter a value in E notation to expand it.

Scientific notation

A number is written as a × 10^b where a is at least 1 and less than 10. It makes very large and very small numbers easy to read and compare.

Engineering notation

The same idea with the exponent forced to a multiple of 3 (kilo, mega, milli, micro). The number in front can then be from 1 up to 999.

Significant figures

Set the significant figures to round the mantissa and keep trailing zeros, so 0.000999 to 2 figures becomes 1.0e-3.

Exact digits

Numbers are handled as decimal digits, not floating point, so long numbers are not corrupted.

Questions

What does the e mean?

e stands for exponent: 1.5e3 means 1.5 × 10³ = 1500. It is not Euler’s number.

Can I type 3 x 10^5?

Yes. That form is understood when expanding.
