MD5, CRC32 and RIPEMD-160 hash generator

Browsers do not include MD5, CRC32 or RIPEMD-160, but many download pages, older systems and checksum lists still use them. This tool computes all three for text you type or a file you choose, without uploading anything.

For SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 use the SHA hash generator.

Or drop a file to hash it

The file stays on your device.

MD5 and CRC32 are fine for checking that a file was not damaged. Do not use them to store passwords or to prove a file is safe, because they can be broken on purpose.

How it works

  1. Type text, or drop a file.
  2. Read the three hashes.
  3. Press Copy next to the one you need.

Checking a download

If a site lists an MD5 checksum, hash your downloaded file here and compare. If the values match exactly, the file was not damaged on the way.

Not for security

MD5 can be broken on purpose, so it cannot prove a file is safe, and it must not be used to store passwords. CRC32 is even weaker and only catches accidental errors.

Which is which

MD5 gives 32 hex characters, RIPEMD-160 gives 40, and CRC32 gives 8. They are different algorithms, so the same text gives different results.

Text encoding

Text is hashed as UTF-8. The same text in another encoding would give another hash.

Questions

Why is my MD5 different from another site?

Usually a trailing space or line break, or a different text encoding. Check the exact input.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit, but very large files use memory. A few hundred megabytes is the practical end.

Is anything uploaded?

No. Your text and files stays in your browser and is never sent anywhere.
