Inflation calculator

Enter an amount, a yearly inflation rate and a number of years. The calculator shows what the same goods will cost then, and how much your money will buy in today’s terms.

This uses one steady rate for every year. Real inflation changes from year to year and differs between countries and goods.

How it works

  1. Enter the amount today.
  2. Enter the yearly inflation rate and the number of years.
  3. Read the future cost and the lost buying power.

Future cost

Prices grow by the inflation rate each year. At 3 percent, something that costs 100 today costs about 134 in ten years.

Buying power

The same effect works backwards for money. 100 held for ten years at 3 percent inflation buys about as much as 74 does today.

Year by year

The table shows each year, or every fifth year for long periods.

A steady rate

The tool uses the same rate every year. Real rates change, so it is a guide and not a forecast.

Questions

What inflation rate should I use?

Use the average from your own country’s statistics office. Many central banks aim for about 2 percent.

Can I use a negative rate?

Yes. A negative rate is deflation, and prices fall.
