How to find and remove hidden characters in AI-written text
Sometimes pasted text behaves oddly. A search does not find a word you can see. A form rejects a value. A line breaks in the wrong place. The cause is often a character you cannot see.
The usual suspects
- Zero-width space (U+200B): takes no space on screen but sits between letters.
- Word joiner and byte order mark (U+2060, U+FEFF): invisible marks that can be left behind by editors and exports.
- Soft hyphen (U+00AD): marks a place where a word may break and shows only at a line end.
- Non-breaking space (U+00A0) and narrow no-break space (U+202F): look like normal spaces but are different characters.
- Left-to-right and right-to-left marks: direction controls that matter in some languages and mean nothing in others.
Where they come from
Mostly from the places text travels through: web pages, PDFs, word processors and chat interfaces. Some people suggest AI companies hide invisible characters in their output as watermarks. I am not aware of any company confirming that, and in practice most of what shows up is ordinary formatting residue. Whatever the cause, it is worth cleaning when it causes trouble.
Why they cause problems
- Search and find-and-replace miss words that contain an invisible character.
- Code, spreadsheets and form fields can fail or compare text as different when it looks identical.
- Two strings that look the same can fail an equality check.
- Odd line breaks and spacing appear in layouts.
Take care with joiners
Not every invisible character is junk. The zero-width joiner and non-joiner are essential for spelling words correctly in languages such as Bangla, Hindi and Persian, and for building emoji like family and flag sequences. A cleaner that strips them blindly breaks real text.
The Toolstia AI text cleaner leaves a joiner alone when it sits next to a non-Latin letter or an emoji, and removes it where it does nothing, such as between English letters. It also keeps direction marks in right-to-left text.
How to clean text step by step
- Open the AI text cleaner and paste your text.
- Read the line under the box. It tells you how many invisible characters, unusual spaces and long dashes it found.
- Keep the options you want switched on: hidden characters, Markdown symbols, extra spaces.
- Choose what to do with long dashes: leave them, or replace them with a comma or a hyphen.
- Copy the clean text.
What cleaning will not do
It changes symbols and spacing only. It does not rewrite your sentences, and it does not make text undetectable by AI checkers, which look at the writing itself. If you published AI-assisted writing where disclosure is expected, cleaning the characters does not change that.
