Adding and subtracting
The fractions are put over a common denominator and combined. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
Multiplying and dividing
To multiply, multiply the tops and the bottoms. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Dividing by zero is not allowed.
Always simplified
Results are divided by the greatest common divisor of top and bottom, so 6/8 shows as 3/4. Calculation uses exact whole numbers, so there is no rounding error.
