Data storage converter

Convert between bits, bytes and the larger units used for files and drives. Both decimal units (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) and binary units (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes) are shown side by side.

How it works

  1. Type the value.
  2. Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you want.
  3. Read the result, and scan the table for every other unit at once.

Decimal versus binary

Drive makers and networks use decimal units: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. Operating systems often use binary units: 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. That is why a 500 GB drive can show as about 465 GiB.

Bits and bytes

A byte is 8 bits. Internet speeds are quoted in bits per second and file sizes in bytes, so divide by 8 to compare.

How big is that

A typical phone photo is a few MB, a film is a few GB and a large backup drive is several TB.

Large units

Petabytes (PB) and pebibytes (PiB) are included for data-centre scale.

Questions

How many MB are in a GB?

1,000 using decimal units, or 1,024 MiB in a GiB using binary units.

Why does my drive show less space?

Because the maker counts in decimal GB while your system shows binary GiB.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The conversion happens in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
