Complementary
The colour opposite your base on the wheel. It gives the strongest contrast.
Analogous
Colours next to your base. They look calm and natural together.
Triadic and tetradic
Three or four colours spaced evenly around the wheel. They are lively and need one dominant colour to keep them in balance.
Split complementary and monochromatic
Split complementary uses the two colours either side of the opposite colour. Monochromatic keeps one hue and changes the lightness.
Questions
Which scheme should I choose?
Analogous is the safest. Complementary and triadic give more contrast, so use them in small amounts.
Does it check accessibility?
No. Test text colours with the contrast checker.
